A George III White Painted, Polychrome and Parcel Gilt Cellarette

A fanciful Regency cellarette of sarcophagus form, the moulded lid with a carved vine leaf and grape cluster and the border with trailing vine leaf and grape decoration enclosing a painted interior, the tapering sides with similar decoration are applied with cast iron handles with floral back plates standing on a moulded plinth on leaf clasped block feet, English c.1780

A comparable cellarette is illustrated in R.Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, Country Life, 1969, p.640. Also of sarcophagus form but standing on lion terminals, Edwards notes the cooler as being characteristic of the Regency archeological phase of design. It is one of those described in the accounts of Thomas Chippendale the Younger as ‘3 Sarcophagus’s carved and painted white and part bronze’.

Provenance: The collection of the late John Fane, Wormsley Park, Buckinghamshire.
