A Victorian ‘orb’ oil lamp

A rare late Victorian Oil-Lamp base in perfect original condition, the brass torchere cradling a pottery reservoir glazed and decorated with birds and small yellow flowers, English circa 1875, the base stamped with the mark of Benham & Froud.

Benham & Froud of Chandos Street, London(1855-1924) were general metal workers, art metal workers and lamp manufacturers.  The famous ‘orb’ shape as seen on the lamp was adopted because the firm made the present cross on the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1821 and it could be seen from the shop in London.
