A Modernist Sofa by PEL England
PEL England were leading manufacturers of tubular steel furniture in Britain in the 1930s. The sofa is In the manner of Thonet and possibly designed by British architect and designer Oliver Percy Bernard, known chiefly for his interior work for Lyons’ Tea Rooms and his spectacular glass entrance to the Strand Palace Hotel in London.
While the chrome plated tubular frame and near perfect ebonised beech arm pads remain in original condition, the seat and back cushions have been recovered in the best quality black leather hide (replacing the lime green textured rexine which we have kept safe somewhere?) so this settee will only benefit from heavy use and age beautifully.
