An Exceptional Pair of French Appliqués

An exceptionally beautiful true pair of forged and hand beaten iron polychrome and oil gilt appliqués, the scrolling leaf design featuring phoenix birds, flowers and raspberry motifs terminating in twin arm sconces with inverted bobeche cups, designed and made by renowned lighting design house Maison Bagues, French c.1890.

Since its establishment in 1860 by master metalsmith Noël Baguès, the Maison Baguès has signified the epitome of French design sophistication in the context of luxury lighting, with each hand assembled piece produced using traditional techniques.

Initially specialists in liturgical bronzes, the firm rapidly expanded their production to include bronze light fixtures in reaction to the development of electrical lighting. Bagues’ son Eugene and two grandsons: Robert and Victor, continued to work for the family business and by the 1920s were producing other metalwork including decorative wrought-iron railings and gates, whilst also continuing to supply intricate and ornate lighting.
