Blåklint, Mmf Ab Swedish Kilim

A Swedish flatweave carpet with a blue ground and cream border featuring geometric motifs representative of Nordic flowers in different colour variations, MMF AB can be found woven into the bottom left hand corner representing the workshop in which the carpet was woven; the initials MR are seen to the bottom right corner and signify that the designer of this carpet was Marianne Richter, this design is Blåklint, Swedish for Cornflower, and dates from 1944. Marianne Richter played a significant role in the MMF AB workshop and was one of two students that worked closely with Barbaro Nilsson who became the artistic director of the MMF workshop on the death of Märta Måås-Fjetterström in 1941 and following the rescue campaign to preserve her workshop and its activities for the future. Richter specialised in creating patterns that had deep roots with Nordic folk arts and were rich in imagination. In 1952 she was commissioned to create a drapery with an area of 200 sq meters for the Social and Economic Council?s room in the UN building of New York. BR287
