C17th Oak Wainscot Throne Armchair
A fabulous oak wainscot throne armchair with a carved square panel back centred by an engraved diamond below a carved arch and floral spandrels, set between decorative carved top and bottom rails, flanked by uprights carved with stylised leaves, over a plain seat formed from two planks, above a decorative apron, the plain arms supported by fluted and tapered uprights finished with carved ball finials, raised on turned and fluted front legs and plain back legs, finished with block feet and braced by peripheral stretchers. English, circa 1670
Notable for its wonderful grey colour and the dryness of the aged wood resulting from years of oxidisation and integral to the overall appeal of the armchair.
The name ‘Wainscot’ derives from the fine grade of oak which was used at the time for wainscot panelling.
