C19th Column Pot Cupboard
A bold, late 19th Century mahogany pot cupboard in the form of a deeply fluted classical column, the circular top with broad moulded edge inset with the original Carrara marble, over a fluted base with concealed door revealing an interior of two shelves, raised on a deep octagonal plinth base, of exceptional quality, colour and condition. English, circa 1882
Edward Joy’s Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design contains a sketch for a near identical pot cupboard by G. Maddox – 1882. The Furniture Gazette Directory, 1876 and 1877 lists Maddox as a cabinet and furniture maker. The firm specialised in bedroom furniture and had many distinguished clients.
