C19th Japanned and Gilt Side Table

A charming and very special 19th Century black japanned and gilt side table, the rectangular top now with delightful aged patina over a frieze decorated on all four sides with gold scrolling acanthus leaves centred by a classical anthemion motif, raised on four slightly tapered legs each centred with a fine gilt stringing line, braced on all sides by a cross-frame mounted at each intersection with a shield painted with the Dickson family crest of a resting stag on a saffron ground framed by a pair of green laurel branches and red berries below an inscription “Cubo Sed Curo” (lie down, but take care). With luggage label outlining provenance in Imogen Taylor’s handwriting. English, circa 1830

Provenance: Michael Raymond, Director of Colefax and Fowler 1960s, gave the table to Imogen Taylor Director of Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler (as seen in her sitting room in Burgundy, House and Garden January 2021 and p.198 On the Fringe by Imogen Taylor). Sold by Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler December 2022
