A Rare Mahogany Occasional Lamp Table Attributed to Christopher Dresser, English, circa 1870

A rare mahogany occasional table attributed to Christopher Dresser, the circular top now with an even dry patina finished with a reeded edge, above a turned column having a faceted upper section above an elliptical barrel form central section, raised on a tall tripod base of square legs with reeded fronts each with an ebonised central groove, united by a faceted dome with reeded top and finished with angular ‘paw form’ feet reflecting Dresser’s interest in Egypt, resting on simple wooden pads. English, circa 1870.

The distinctive angular foot is typical of many of Christopher Dresser’s designs for other mediums eg. the silver and glass claret jug and the Coalbrookdale Co chair both displayed at the V&A . ‘During 1880 Dresser was editor of the Furniture Gazette, in which many anonymous designs were drawn by R.A. Boyd and other draughtsman employed in Dresser’s own office.’ Victorian and Edwardian Furniture and Interiors’ Jeremy Cooper
