C19th Walnut Curule Stool
A Italian Renaissance Revival ‘Savonarola’ Curule walnut stool of characteristic backless folding X-frame form, the slatted sides enclosing a curved slatted seat, each finished with a simple shaped top rail and conforming base rail. Italian circa 1880
In Ancient Rome this style of chair was reserved for use by the highest government dignitaries. The revival of interest in the Ancient World in the 18th Century saw the resurgence of the popularity of these seats, albeit in an adapted and often embellished form, as a representation of political or military authority.
