Mashrabiya Moorish Side Chair
A wonderful side chair in cedar wood, resembling a Moorish throne, the tall back having an upper gallery of spindles with two turned finials to the top, over a patchwork of highly decorative Mashrabiya panels – small intricately designed windows of tiny hand turned detailed latticework. The plain seat raised on square legs with turned feet which frame decorative architectural Moorish arches with drop finials on all sides, each corner having a further Mashrabiya panel in remarkably well preserved condition. Early 20th Century.
Mashrabiya design can be traced all the way back through the history of Islamic architecture. Used here as decoration, traditionally the technique was used on windows and doors as a cool shield to the hot air outside, helping the air flow through rooms as well as keeping the interior space private from the busy streets outside.
