An exceptional nineteenth-century English Iron Hoop-back Armchair
The original iron hoop-back frame and coil-sprung arms on a shaped, wood seat frame raised on turned and tapering front legs and down-swept back legs, all on original castors.
This armchair is a superlative example of the resourceful inventiveness at the heart of the Howe enterprise – honouring an innovative nineteenth-century chair design by restoring its functionality through a skilful and imaginative combination of traditional upholstery techniques and materials and a highly original ‘deconstructed reconstruction’ of the seat and upholstered lumber supports.
The original coil-sprung arms have been left partly exposed with comfort added by extending the fitted back squab over the arms, meticulously finished with a hand-stitched square edge. The fitted squab back is tied to the exposed hand-forged iron hoop back with linen line tabs and is held in place by a floating lumbar support which has exposed sides in hessian revealing its construction. The blue, hand-dyed vintage French linen covering fabric contrasts dynamically with the upholsterer’s exposed meticulous hand-stitching, and the exposed hessian and raw linen edges of the seat.
