Panel Back Windsor Chair

The Windsor is one of the most archetypal of English vernacular chairs. It was made in components, namely ‘spindles’ and ‘bows’, which were turned and steam bent by the ‘Bodgers’ who lived and worked in the woods, managing and coping the trees. The parts were supplied to workshops in the nearby town who assembled the chair and added the seat. This particular form of Windsor, known as a ‘comb back’, has the unique feature of a skate stuffed upholstered panel in the back incorporating our own Moroccan leather from Howe at 36 Bourne Street, available in a gorgeous range of colours.

The Windsor chair is crafted to order in one of our specialist workshops by a traditional Windsor chair maker. It is made by hand using solid oak and elm, giving the chair visibly superior craftsmanship and the resilience to withstand heavy use, whilst the skate stuffed leather panel back makes this chair extraordinarily comfortable. The result is a piece of furniture that will only improve through use and the passing of time.

3 complete chairs available now as shown in Natural Maroc ‘Malachite’, ‘Poppy’ and ‘Ink’ (from left to right). We also have a good stock of frames that are awaiting your selection of leather from Howe at 36 Bourne Street, with upholstery available on a short lead time.
