‘Riempie Bankie’ Safari Stool
A small South African Safari Stool or ‘Riempie Bankie’ by Fechters of Knysna. The top with vellum ‘Riempie’ thonging, sitting into sharply turned recesses. Over four hand turned splayed legs, braced with with expertly hand carved dowels. In lovely original condition, retaining the maker’s ivorine label to the underside reading “FECHTER’S R.S.A KNYSNA”. South African, circa 1960
Knysna is located on the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape near the Tsitsikamma Forests which are full of indigenous trees, in particular stinkwood and yellow wood, which are the chief woods historically used in Cape furniture making. Fechters is still going, and was the ‘go to’ furniture store for well-to-do South Africans in the middle of the twentieth century. This is a good example of their traditional style furniture and probably made in the 60s or 70s.
