An Original Wardrobe Linen Press by C. Lazarus & Co. Cabinet Makers of Calcutta
An original wardrobe linen press by C. Lazarus & Co. Cabinet makers of Calcutta.
An exceptional and interesting late C18th/early C19th mahogany wardrobe or linen press by C. Lazarus & Co. the historic leading cabinet makers of Calcutta.
The two pairs of decoratively panelled doors with scrolling corners opening to reveal four sliding trays to the upper part and a classic arrangement of two short and two long drawers in the bottom chest. A bold moulded cornice sits above while the lower chest sits comfortably on a simple moulded plinth raised on square pad feet, the patina rich and deep in colour and the piece retains all of the original hardware and maker’s name plate.
B.W Lazarus established a cabinet making workshop in Calcutta in the early 19th century. The firm was later recorded as C.Lazarus and Sons and eventually became one of the leading furniture shops India, fusing western taste, with native woods and sensibilities. Inspiration was drawn from western design templates such as George Smith’s The Cabinet Maker’s and Upholsterer’s Guide, London, 1826 and the works of Gillows of Lancaster and London.
