C19th Moorish Inlaid Table
A 19th Century Moroccan side table, the unusual square shape top having a bone and ivory inlaid rosette with surrounding floral decoration, above four sides each with highly decorative Mashrabiya panels, the tiny hand turned detailed latticework framing stylised scrolling architectural Moorish arches, with a conforming foliage inlaid design. In original used condition with areas of loss and cracks, consistent with age, but charming none the less.
Mashrabiya design can be traced all the way back through the history of Islamic architecture. Used here as decoration, traditionally the technique was used on windows and doors as a cool shield to the hot air outside, helping the air flow through rooms as well as keeping the interior space private from the busy streets outside.
