Late George III Console Table in the Florentine Style

A fine and rare English late Geo III or early Regency console table in the Italian Florentine style, the rectangular top veneered in strips of kingwood, the border inset with alternating circular and diamond scagliola medallions simulating marble inlays in the Roman style, so very fashionable at this time of the Grand Tour. The shallow kingwood frieze below has a simple stepped band of matching swirling scagliola, the bottom edge with cast brass lambs-tongue moulding, supported on a pair of urns surmounting swept legs with bold typically Florentine scrolling knees, all applied with a conforming layer of scagliola, and terminating with a scrolled foot, raised on a pretty segmented bun, the back plain vertical supports also veneered in kingwood. Retaining a wonderful genuine surface and vast tonal variation in wood colour and patina. English, circa 1800.

Provenance: Supplied by David Mlinaric to Asprey’s, during the major redesign of their eponymous New Bond Street showroom, London, by Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi, architect Norman Foster, 1999/2000
