Gillows Mahogany Centre Table
An impeccable mahogany centre table by Gillows of Lancaster, the circular top of fabulous even colour hinged on a block with impressed stamp GILLOWS LANCASTER, retaining the original working gilt brass securing mechanism, above a turned and lobed stem, raised on four hipped splayed and reeded legs terminating with brass caps and castors. English, circa 1825
‘Round ‘snap’ tables on a centre pedestal were part of the common repertoire of any cabinetmaker. Robert Gillow I recorded them in his first notebook in the 1730s and the firm continued to make them in this form.’ Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 Susan E. Stuart
