Brunel Table
A wonderfully engineered and crafted pedestal dining or centre table, named in homage to the infamous and prolific British mechanical engineer of the industrial revolution. Our Brunel table – with its mighty presence and expert construction – is handmade in one of our specialist workshops from English oak that has been sourced locally, with an iron stem that has been cast by hand in Birmingham. It’s a slow and lengthy process to prepare the timber alone; the oak is quarter sawn, making it less likely to twist and buckle and kiln dried for up to two weeks to remove the moisture. It is then sanded back and brushed with a bronze brush to clear out the dust, revealing the beautiful grain. Finally the top is finished with an elegant reeded edge detail and fumed, giving the timber it’s delicious chocolatey brown tone. The cast iron stem can be left raw or painted in a colour of your choice.
Whilst we regularly make our Brunel Table to order in diameters of up to 1m to 1.6m, we rarely pass on the opportunity to push the limits at HOWE, recently making a Brunel at the remarkable length of 3.5m(!) with just one column support at either end. It was a very special commission that required precise planning and a specially engineered timber frame to support the epic top. A thing of beauty we hope would make both the client and Brunel very happy.
