Balloon Back Chair in Antique Ikat
Available now, a Made by Howe Balloon Back Chair, traditionally upholstered in a characteristically hazy antique ikat, in blue and white. Immense skill and patience is required to create such a cloth, which involves the tying, precise dyeing and untying of the threads before preparing the loom to weave with them.
The balloon shaped back was very fashionable in the late 18th century, inspired by the first hot air balloon to fly over Paris in 1783 designed by the Montgolfier brothers. This neatly proportioned George III design from the Gainsborough period is hand crafted in beech, set on plain square legs, and traditionally upholstered with a webbed and hand-stitched horse hair seat and back, creating an exceptionally slim and particularly comfortable seat.
